![]() Society closes down options to people all the time, and limits the choices those people can make without even guaranteeing happiness afterwards! How do we know that doesn't outweigh the removal of choice beforehand? That's a clear improvement on the situation before, when they almost certainly weren't happy, and even the unlikely best scenario going forward wouldn't be happy either, so not only did you improve general happiness (for selfish reasons) you didn't have to sacrifice happiness of the individual for the many. The result of your actions make it that somebody is now very happy and making others happier too. As is the idea that good can't come from selfish intentions. I too am a big fan of self determination, but it's not emergent through a logical framework. Which I think is a very good one, and a luckily often shared assumption but an instinctual, emotional one all the same. ![]() Yeah, That's the a priori assumption that self determination is a moral good in itself that outweighs the result of happiness through forced actions. So your very reasonable question of "Would a mentally stable individual agree to undergo this procedure" is countered with "would the person afterwards actually feel harmed and still be unconsenting?"Īgain for us it's instinctively easy to see it as harm, I was more pointing out that moral philosophy wise it's actually pretty darn hard to set up a coherent system that would logically classify it as such that isn't dependent on a priori assumptions. For example we often operate on people unable to give consent though, when we believe the outcome would improve their situations, like children, people knocked out in accidents. Most of the times the person would see it as extremely harmful and continue to view it negatively. And we have strong reservation against forcing people into operations "for their own good" since it often does not lead to them agreeing afterwards. Likewise the fact that operating on someone without consent and/or who is unable to give consent is flat out monstrous is mostly so because we have a clear indication that the person would be even more likely to not consent and be happy to be operated on after the fact. The you in that situation is literally measurably fine with it. But that hard pass is from the you in this situation. r/RimWorldStreams - For all of your videos and streams needs r/RimWorldTales - /u/srgrafo's Rimworld Comic Series r/RimworldSwap - Swap saves with other players r/ShitRimworldSays - /r/nocontext posts about /r/RimWorld r/RimworldArt - Posts about Rimworld Artwork (not fanart!) r/Rimreddit - Colonists playing only on a single planet r/RimWorldPorn - High Quality Images of Rimworld Colonies No discussing pirated versions of the game.
